Data vs. Intelligence
Your boss tells you to fix something. You struggle with it. You fix it. Your boss never follows up. You never tell anyone about it.
That kind of seems like a success, right? ... kind of, but not really. 😐
Yeah, the problem is fixed, except no one but you learned anything. You didn't document it anywhere, and your boss just committed an accountability error (more on that in my last post).
This is an example of a dumb organization.
You read that right ... dumb; as in, not intelligent. Rude, but true. Now, here's what I mean
Data is Noise
Data can be almost anything.
- numbers
- text
- bytes
- images
- videos
- scents
- sounds
- texture
Virtually anything a person, machine, or entity can receive as input is data.
The human body, for example, senses 11 million bits per second according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. However, an "intelligent" activity from a human only processes 50 bits per second. That's 0.00045% of data that goes right through you every second without making an impact. 😮
Why? Because your body knows that data is garbage unless it is filtered and processed correctly. Anciently, humans who didn't do this got distracted and eaten by lions. 🦁😋
By extension, businesses that don't learn to do this fail or stagnate.
Intelligence is Strategic Advantage
Intelligence is what happens when you filter and process data correctly, in a Ferris wheel fashion. 🎡 Here's how it works at both the individual human level and on a business level:
- We take or collect noisy data
- We filter and validate that data into Intelligence
- We synthesize and process that data into Knowledge
- We act on that knowledge to produce Experience
- We measure and observe the results of experience to produce the next set of data
- Repeat starting at step #2
In theory, you should get better and better every time you go through this process within a particular domain. However, there are just as many steps where things can break down.
Either the technical systems break down or the humans break down.
When it's broken, you're dumb.
When it's working, you're intelligent.
When you do it better than the rest, your knowledge becomes secrets, and your experience becomes a strategic advantage. 💪
